Pancyprian Union of Agriculturists

The activities of Pancyprian Union of Agriculturists, during the first quarter of 2008, were the following:

• Its Board had four regular meetings, during which routine and current subjects of special interest were dealt with.
• The Annual Regular Regional Assemblies, which according to its Statutes are held during the first quarter of each year, were convened and an assessment of previous year’s proceedings took place.
• A visit to Greece’s agricultural exhibition Agrotica in Thessalonica was realised, with a participation of 78 Agriculturists and farmers.
• The most serious problem faced nowadays not only by the farm sector but by the Cyprus economy as a whole, is drought and water shortage. PUA issued an announcement to the media stating its position and its suggestions on the subject.
• The President Mr George Photiou and the Member of the Board Mr Stelios Stylianou participate in the Board Meeting of CEDIA, held in Paris the 1st of March.

Organised events for the second quarter of 2008:

• 20th of May: Lecture on the Rynchophorus ferrugineus, the red palm weevil, co organised with Limassol Municipality.
• 23rd and 24th of May: Participation of the President of PUA at the Board Meeting and General Assembly of CEDIA, as well as at the International Conference on << Southern Europe Irrigation Systems>> to be held within the framework of the G.A.
• 24th of May: The annual ball of PUA, which is under the auspices of the Minister of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, to be held in Sandy Beach Hotel in Larnaca.
• 7th of June: The annual Pancyprian Conference of the General Representatives of PUA, to discus and approve the policy and the activities program for the year ahead.
