Pancyprian Union of Agriculturists (P.U.A.)

Pancyprian Union of Agriculturists (P.U.A.) was established in 1959, with the aim, according to its statutes, to safeguard and promote the interests of its members, as well as to contribute to the agricultural development of Cyprus, through:

  • The application and distribution of the agronomic knowledge and the promotion of agricultural research
  • The active participation of Agriculturists in the economic, cultural and social life of Cyprus.
  • The legal consolidation of the profession of Agriculturist.
  • The promotion and solution of its members’ problems and the defending of their rights, as well as the improvement of their status and the conditions of their work.
  • The continuous education and training of its members.
  • The publication of its own newsletter and of relevant scientific and informative material.

Registration in P.U.A is voluntary and members may become all agriculturists, either Cypriots or citizens of EU Member States, holders of a university degree in agricultural Science, provided they are registered in the Agriculturists Register, according to the Law N.32/1987. This Law regulates the Agriculturist’s profession and prohibits the exercise of it by non registered persons. Responsible for the examination of the qualifications and the registration of Agriculturists, who fulfill the requirements provided by the above Law, is the Registration Council.

The organizational structure of P.U.A. is constituted by four 5member Provincial Committees and by a 9member Central Board, which governs P.U.A.

Every two years the members of P.U.A. in each Province, who pay their annual €20 fee, assemble to elect their 5 member’s Committee, as well as the General Representatives, whom their number is proportional to their member’s number.

The General Representatives assemble once a year to determine the policy that will be followed by the Board until the next Assembly and every two years to elect 5 members for the Central Board. The other four members of the Board are ex officio the Chairmen of the Provincial Committees.

P.U.A. participates in various Councils and Institutions, which are activated in the agricultural sector. Also is invited and expresses its opinion in Parliamentary Committees, when subjects of agricultural interest are discussed. Furthermore it submits proposals to the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources and Environment, as well as to other Authorities, regarding Agricultural Policy, Environment, Agricultural Education and other relative subjects.

For the continuous education of its members, as well as for the diffusion of agronomic knowledge to farmers, P.U.A. organizes frequently seminars and workshops, as well as educational visits and excursions, both in Cyprus and abroad.
